Shorty’s BBQ has been a South Florida institution since 1951, when E.L. “Shorty” Allen opened the doors to his humble roadside barbecue stand in Miami. What started as a small joint with picnic tables and hickory-smoked meats quickly gained a loyal following, thanks to its down-to-earth atmosphere and hearty portions. Over the decades, Shorty’s expanded to multiple locations, but it never lost its old-school charm or its commitment to authentic pit barbecue.
The menu has grown from classic ribs and chicken plates to a wide range of sandwiches, steaks, and hearty sides, each carrying that signature smoky flavor. What many fans don’t realize, though, is that Shorty’s also has a secret menu—special combinations and off-the-menu favorites whispered about by regulars. Still, the one dish that started it all—the legendary slab of slow-smoked ribs—remains the heart of Shorty’s BBQ and continues to be the item everyone comes back for.
