Sonny’s BBQ began in 1968 when Floyd “Sonny” Tillman opened the first location in Gainesville, Florida. His goal was simple — serve real-deal, slow-smoked BBQ with Southern hospitality. The food spoke for itself, and Sonny’s quickly expanded across the Southeast, becoming a go-to spot for pulled pork, ribs, and brisket.
Over the years, the menu grew, but the heart of it stayed the same — wood-smoked meats and classic sides. While most fans know the regular menu, few are aware of the secret menu that exists behind the scenes.
Hidden favorites like Redneck Egg Rolls (pulled pork and slaw wrapped and fried) and the Brisket Grilled Cheese are local legends, passed by word of mouth. These off-menu items keep the die-hard fans coming back.
Still, the original sliced pork sandwich remains the star — the dish that started it all and still captures the flavor of Sonny’s roots.
